Agnieszka Holland was born in Warsaw, Poland, and graduated from FAMU in Prague. She then joined the group of young directors known as the ‘filmmakers of moral agitation’, associated with her mentor, the renowned Andrzej Wajda. Her dozens of films and television projects have been acclaimed by critics and have earned her, amongst other honours, a Golden Globe, several Oscar and Emmy nominations, and her works have premiered and won awards at festivals around the world, notably in Toronto, New York, Telluride, Venice and Berlin. They often explore themes such as politics, faith and mysticism, and examine how we deal with critical situations from a moral perspective.
