Emilia Kina, born in 1990, lives and works in Kraków. In 2010, she began her studies in the Department of Painting at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Her work spans painting and photography.
The curtain is the central motif of her practice. This theme enables her to examine both the materiality of the painted image and the elements that compose it, whilst exploring the sense of mystery and theatricality inherent in the images, which are often inspired by historical painting. Her work thus examines the relationship between form and the meanings it conveys.
Site-specific work also plays an important role in her practice. Through these interventions, she explores the relationship between the image and the space it occupies, drawing the viewer into the installation’s environment. Her paintings lie at the intersection of pictorial illusion and sculpture.
She has taken part in numerous exhibitions in Poland and abroad, notably at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Kraków (MOCAK), the Gdańsk City Gallery 1, the BWA Contemporary Art Gallery in Katowice, the Raster Gallery in Warsaw, the Polish Institute in Düsseldorf, the Šopa Gallery in Košice, the Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery in London, and the East Contemporary Gallery in Milan.
