Filip Rybkowski (born in 1991) is a visual artist, a graduate of the Faculty of Painting at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, and co-founder of the Piana Gallery Foundation. In his artistic practice, he employs the critical act of (re)construction, combined with a reflection on the political dimension of acts of restoration, reproduction and conservation. In his intermedia work, he utilises a wide variety of media, ranging from painting (including stained glass and mosaics), through drawing, photography and found objects, to sculpture and installation.
The hallmarks of his work are the poetics of the fragment and the palimpsest, the omnipresent use of quotations and pseudo-quotations, and the visual deconstruction and reconstruction of artefacts, events and original situations. His works have been exhibited at venues including MoCAK – the Museum of Contemporary Art in Kraków, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Zachęta – National Art Gallery in Warsaw, the Central Museum of Textiles in Łódź, Trafo Trafostacja Sztuki in Szczecin, the Bunkier Sztuki contemporary art gallery in Kraków, the Kode Art Museum in Bergen, and the Krakauer Haus in Nuremberg. In 2024, he was awarded first prize in the Krupa Art Foundation’s Young Art Prize competition. Originally from Szczecin, he lives and works in Kraków.
