Marcin Maciejowski, born in 1974, first made a name for himself on the international scene as a member of the group Grupa Ładnie (‘Pretty Group’), alongside other students from the Kraków University of Technology. The group “used humour and triviality rather than imitating the pompous teaching of the art schools” in order to achieve a form of honesty and accessibility in painting, thereby helping to revitalise the medium in Poland. A chronicler of everyday life and a connoisseur of art history, he draws his imagery from a variety of media – notably newspapers, television, advertising and his own photographs – depicting scenes ranging from the alluring to the mundane. His works have been exhibited at numerous venues, including the Belvedere, Vienna; Volpinum Kunstsammlung, Vienna; Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Foundation, Vienna; Museum der Moderne, Salzburg; MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art, Kraków; Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, Warsaw; SCHAUWERK Sindelfingen; and the Burger Collection, Berlin.
