Sławomir Mrożek, born in 1930 in Borzęcin, was an internationally renowned Polish writer and playwright. In 1963, he emigrated to Italy, then to France and Mexico. In 1996, he returned to his native country and settled in Kraków. He died in 2013 in Nice. Recognised as one of Eastern Europe’s greatest playwrights and satirists for over half a century, he made his debut in 1958 with the play Policja (Police). His plays, now regarded as classics, were received with enthusiasm. He was a scathing critic of all systems of oppression during the Cold War. His dramatic work, associated with the Theatre of the Absurd, and his press cartoons combine the grotesque with humour, subverting political and economic systems by revealing both their universality and their contradictions. The exhibition features numerous original examples of his satirical drawings.
